The Passing of CAPT Steve Taylor, USN (Ret.)
Dear USNPAA Members,
It is with very deep sadness to inform you about the recent passing of Captain Steve Taylor.
Steve had a remarkable career, serving nearly 30 years in direct support of senior leaders including Admirals McCain, Crowe, Howe, Boorda and Zumwalt. He also supported Secretaries Clayton and Hidalgo. Steve had the opportunity to participate in several history-making operations. One of his most notable assignments was as a Lieutenant. Steve led the Combat News Bureau in Saigon, escorted the media covering the ‘Brown Water Navy’ along Vietnamese rivers and served as an advisor to the South Vietnamese Navy.
Steve was the consummate professional. He was always willing to mentor and take fellow public affairs officers under his wing. Personally, I was always impressed with his calm demeanor, even when it seemed the crisis we were facing at the time was of epic proportions. His ability to put things in perspective or to ask “Have you thought of this?” has remained with me today. For those of us who knew him, we can all attest to his patience and kindness.
Steve was a remarkable individual in countless respects—the most notable was his faith. Following his retirement, Steve served for 15 years supporting the spiritual health of military members through the Military Ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. His faith clearly shaped his life and the legacy he passed on to his family and all those whose lives he touched. I had the privilege of speaking with Steve shortly before his passing, and I can attest to the strength of that faith. It had not waned.
Steve is survived by wife Vici, four children and twelve grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Captain Chris Taylor, another member of the Navy PAO community.
Kindly keep Vici and Steve’s entire family in your thoughts and prayers. Details about arrangements will be passed along as they become known.
