The Passing of LCDR James R. McCain USN (Ret)
Dear USNPAA Members,
I am very saddened to report the passing of LCDR James R. McCain at age 93. He was one of the oldest members of our community.
Jim served as a journalist with Carrier Group 3 aboard six different aircraft carriers during the Korean War and was a member of the inaugural class at the Navy’s then newly established Journalist School at Great Lakes, Ill. He was commissioned as an unrestricted line officer and assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Shangri-La as the Admin Officer, PAO, and underway OOD. In 1969, Jim was selected as a Public Affairs Specialist. Serving in several PAO billets, his final assignment was as COMPHIBPAC’s PAO in Coronado where he retired to become the city of San Diego’s first Public Information Officer (PIO). He later served as the first PIO for San Diego County followed by serving as the Public Affairs Officer for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Preceded in death by his two sons, he is survived by his wife Lucretia, daughter, six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Please keep Jim’s family in your thoughts as he rests in peace.
Sincerely,
Dick Thompson
