The Passing of CDR Richard E. Busby, USN (Ret)
Dear USNPAA Members,
We are very saddened to report the passing of Commander Dick Busby.
Dick was another public affairs community stalwart who served on active duty for 22 years. During his career, he was involved in handling several crises in the Caribbean; the burning and sinking of a minesweeper off San Juan; Marine Corps humanitarian assistance in Haiti and the the Dominican Republic after a devastating hurricane; several ship collisions; and recovery operations for an H-Bomb off Palomares, Spain. Dick also served a tour in Vietnam.
Those who knew Dick will always remember him for his sense of humor. In fact, he was so funny that he was often asked to be the MC at PAO farewell roasts. And in our business, sometimes a good sense of humor that could generate a smile or laugh is often a great medicine.
Dick was one of those gifted individuals who entered college at an early age. In Dick’s case, he entered the University of Texas at 15 and earned his journalism degree from there. He went on to receive two graduate degrees—one from the Naval War College and another from George Washington University.
Dick is survived by his wife, Jessie. They were married for 60 years. He is also survived by two sons, Richard, Jr. and Russell, and two grandchildren.
For those who desire to remember Dick with a donation, donations can be made to the Pender United Methodist Church, 1401 Alder Woods Dr., Fairfax, VA 22203 or to a charity of your choice.
If you would like to send a note to the family or leave a memory, you can do so by visiting the Adams-Green Funeral Home website at this link.
Sincerely,
