The Passing of CDR Allen Sherwood
Dear Association Members:
It’s with deep sadness that I report the death of Commander Allen Sherwood. Allen was a terrific member of the Navy public affairs community, and many of us who knew him have nothing but fond memories of him. Susan Prest, Allen’s wife, perhaps captures Allen the best in saying he was “larger than life."
Captain Bill Graves recalls that Allen came to NAVINFO Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. NAVINFO LA was Allen’s first duty station after returning to active duty from the reserves. Bill was the director, and Allen worked on several movie projects the Navy was assisting at the time. This included “MacArthur” that featured Gregory Peck. The movie was released in 1977. Bill has nothing but fond memories of Allen.
Allen also served as the PAO for NAVBASE San Francisco during his active duty tenure. Commander Dick Thompson, who was serving as the director of NAVINFO San Francisco/Northwest at the time, recalls working with Allen in the 1980s. “We supported each other and traded staff to cover shortfalls when needed. Allen was a great Naval Officer, PAO, and an even better person,” says Dick. To say Allen was a “team player” would be an understatement.
Between his first release from active duty and return to active duty at NAVINFO LA, Allen worked as the Appointment Secretary and Assistant Press Secretary to then California Governor Ronald Reagan.
Susan says Allen’s desires were to be interred at the new California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery in a beautiful area of Old Fort Ord. Susan will be making the necessary arrangements the early part of next week, and we will pass them on as soon as they are known.
Please join me and those who knew and served with Allen in expressing our deepest sympathies to Susan and the Sherwood family. Allen was a “class act.”
