The Passing of Rear Adm. Richard Becker
Dear USNPAA Members,
It is with much sadness that we report the recent passing of Rear Adm. Dick Becker. Dick served very proudly as a Naval reservist. He commanded many public affairs units during his tenure as a public affairs professional and rose to be the senior leader of the Naval Reserve public affairs community. To say he was highly regarded and respected would be an understatement.
Rear Adm. Becker entered the Navy in 1965 after graduating from Michigan State University. He served on active duty for two years aboard the destroyer HAROLD J ELLISON. He then remained in the Reserves.
Dick had a sterling reputation, not just in the Reserve community but across the entire public affairs community. He clearly exemplified the “one Navy” concept. The active duty community always enjoyed working with Dick Becker. Those who worked with him, whether it be when he was on an ACDUTRA or in a Reserve unit, always enjoyed his infectious sense of humor which he often used to diffuse tense situations and to motivate others to reach higher levels.
One senior Naval reservist who worked extensively with Dick characterized him as being a “Sailor’s admiral.”
“Dick listened to, identified with and inspired Navy men and women. He made you proud to wear the Crackerjack uniform,” said his colleague.
After serving aboard ELLISON, Dick returned to Grand Rapids to begin his civilian career. Dick is well-known for his being a key part of the Steelcase company—a major U.S. company and manufacturer of office furniture. Dick managed human resources for the company.
As a member of the Grand Rapids community, Dick immersed himself in myriad community activities, including performing in a local theatre company.
Dick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lorrie, a daughter, two sons and ten grandchildren.
Contributions in Dick’s honor can be made to the American Lung Association or the Harbor Humane Society.
Fair winds and following seas, Shipmate.
Sincerely,
Dick Thompson
