Elected to Kentucky state legislature, Rejuvenated hometown
The Passing of CAPT Mike Cherry, USN (Ret.)
Dear USNPAA Members,
We are very saddened to report the unfortunate passing of Captain Mike Cherry this past February.
Mike was a solid public affairs officer and served as the PAO for CINCPACFLT, Sixth Fleet and SACLANT in Norfolk. He served in Vietnam and also at Guantanamo Bay, amongst other positions. Mike was very well respected professionally in the public affairs community as evidenced by the positions that he held.
After his Navy retirement, he channeled his leadership and entrepreneurial spirit into the rejuvenation of his hometown in Princeton, Kentucky. He renovated six business district storefronts, opening an antique mall and reviving a theater.
Mike also had a love for politics. He demonstrated this by being elected to the Kentucky state legislature in 1998. He was instrumental in enacting over 40 bills. Some of these bills included the first reform bill of the state pension system and Kentucky’s first Bullying Bill. This earned him numerous accolades such as the “Kids first Advocacy Award” and the Kentucky “Heavy Hitter Award." Mike served in the Kentucky state legislature until 2012 and was one of the longest serving legislators in Kentucky history.
Captain Cherry’s contributions to his country and his community are long, substantive and meaningful. He touched countless people during his lifetime.
Mike is survived by his wife, Dixie Gale, a son and a sister. Please keep Mike’s family in your thoughts.
