The Passing of CAPT Bill Hendrix
Dear USNPAA Members,
It is with deep sorrow to report the passing of retired Captain Bill Hendrix. Bill was a highly respected Naval reservist whose professional career spanned several decades. In addition to his exemplary career in uniform, his civilian positions included roles in local network television news, communications for two U.S. senators (Senators Orrin Hatch and Jake Garn) and corporate communications for two trade associations.
His time on active duty included serving as the commanding officer of NAVINFO 101 in Boston and Newport. He deployed to Bosnia where he was awarded a NATO medal. He also earned meritorious unit commendations with two Bronze Stars and a Humanitarian Service Medal. Bill was recalled to active duty during Operation Desert Storm and served in Washington, DC.
Friend and shipmate Captain Jim Harnar fondly remembers Bill’s commitment to his family. Jim’s words speak volumes about the character of Bill Hendrix:
“Those of us who served under Bill will never forget his unwavering devotion to his wife Karla, a vibrant and wonderful woman who was diagnosed at a young age with MS and who declined rapidly. Over their 30-year marriage, Karla’s care required a tremendous amount of daily personal care by Bill. He remained positive and devoted through it all. All of us who knew Bill and Karla were filled with admiration for them both,” says Jim.
Rest in peace, Shipmate Hendrix. You served your country very well and proudly. Know that your family is in our thoughts and prayers.
